The Creative Mind Behind The Stories

Growing up on the Behrens Farm with her grandparents, Susan loved dirt, hay fields, and catching bugs and butterflies. Every day after school you could find her mothering chicks, calves, kittens, puppies, or piglets.

Susan lives with her husband on their own farm in Illinois. And now that her kids are grown, she's become mother to a flock of escape-artist chickens, her daughter's lovely saddlebred horse, two Jack Russell terriers, and the star of her stories—a rather loud, ornery goose. Susan found her calling as an editor but also loves to write, cook, eat, garden, and paint.

She plans to publish more heart-warming stories for young readers and adults, hoping to instill the same deep love for family, farm life, and fun that she found on her grandparents' farm . . . and the barn she called home.

Meet the Illustrator

Marina Saumell is an Argentina-based illustrator. She graduated in 2003 with a degree in architecture. Her first career in commercial architecture morphed quickly after the birth of her first child. Her growing love for children's books inspired her to venture into book illustration.

Since 2006, she has joyously followed her passion for drawing and illustration. Her images reveal her background in architecture and also her interest in the effects of light to convey emotions. She has illustrated more than 50 children's books, engaging all audiences from early readers to young adults.

Marina lives in Mar del Plata with her husband and their two children. Ruffled Feathers is her first collaboration with Susan Pierson.
